FIG. 6: Although NIV is currently being successfully implemented during acute exacerbations of COPD and showing successful outcomes, the prognosis for those patients following discharge remains poor, and this is true whether the data come from the UK (see the data from Murray et al[10] in this Figure), from Hong Kong,[11] or from the United States,[12] with survival rates of approximately 60% at 12 months across all of these studies. In other words, even though these data have been accumulated in very different healthcare settings, they confirm that the prognosis for these patients remains poor.
