FIG. 42: This Figure shows the baseline characteristics of the patients enrolled in HOT-HMV.[1] As one would expect, the patients in this trial were aged in the mid-to-late 60s and they were on the thinner end of the bodyweight scale for patients with COPD, because we had excluded patients with significant obesity. Again as expected, a significant proportion of patients were already on long-term O2 therapy (LTOT) and had significant rates of previous COPD-related admissions.
However, in contrast to previous trials of home O2 ventilation, there were approximately 50% male and female patients, whereas many earlier trials had predominance of male participants. There was significant airflow obstruction, with FEV1 values of approximately 600 mL or between 20% and 25% of predicted.
