FIG. 38: The most common reason for failure to be enrolled in HOT-HMV following an acute exacerbation requiring NIV was improvement in the degree of hypercapnia during the recovery phase, so that the arterial blood gasses did not meet inclusion criteria, either due to a lack of significant hypercapnia or resolution of hypoxia during the recovery phase.[1] This clearly differentiates the patient population in this study from those recruited in the RESCUE trial,[13] who were screened in the earlier phase when hypercapnia have still been present.
