The positive results of adding NIV to standard treatment for acute hypercapnic respiratory failure due to COPD shown in the previous Figures changed medical thinking and, as shown in this Figure, use of NIV for initial treatment of acute exacerbations of COPD has increased over time, whereas invasive mechanical ventilation has decreased.[12]
