Proper Use of NIV
To date the only recommendations regarding treatment of patients with stable hypercapnic COPD come from the German Society for Pneumology.[6] However the results of the German multicenter study showing a positive impact of HMV on long-term survival[5] changed our understanding. In a multimedia activity published on-line in 2015 in Chest,[7] a panel of experts stated that proper use of NIV in appropriately chosen patients with COPD can improve QOL, with data also suggesting that it may reduce the frequency of future hospitalizations and increase survival.
