Domiciliary Non-invasive Ventilation in COPD: An International Survey of Indications and Practices

This Figure shows the results of an international survey of indications and practices regarding NIV in COPD.[1] First, it can be clearly seen that COPD is a common indication for home mechanical ventilation (HMV). However, looking at the percentage of NIV prescriptions in COPD patients across different countries, it is clear that these prescriptions vary among countries, which might be due to the ongoing discussion about whether HMV is truly indicated in patients with stable hypercapnic COPD. We should know from the past, however, that the question should not be whether noninvasive mechanical ventilation is indicated in stable hypercapnic COPD; rather the better question would be, what is the best technique for HMV in COPD patients?
