Non-Pharmacologic Treatment – Summary (continued)
FIG: 11: The final recommendation of the 2017 GOLD report concerning non-pharmacologic treatment deals with gas exchange and balances.[8] If patients are severely hypoxemic – ie, PaO2 is ≤55 torr at rest or evidence of secondary pulmonary hypertension with a PaO2 of 59 mmHg – long-term oxygen therapy is suggested. For patients with chronic severe hypercapnia with a history of hospitalization for acute respiratory failure, the recommendation is that long-term noninvasive ventilation should be considered on an individualized basis.
