This Figure shows the metabolism of niacin (extended-release, Niaspan) versus placebo in humans, demonstrating an increase of about 20% in the production of apoA-I, and an enhanced clearance of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins, whether they are of intestinal or hepatic origin. Animal studies with niacin have also shown that niacin clearly up-regulates reverse cholesterol transport by increasing the activity of the macrophage ABCA1 transporter.
