As shown in Figure, the measurement results of plasma triglyceride concentrations using 8 commercial lipid analysis labs vary significantly from the standard reference measure procedure. As a result, we are trying to translate the results of these long-established, well-conducted epidemiologic studies related to HDL cholesterol as a biomarker of risk with one set of analytical procedures that have been substituted with a different set of analytical procedures. This is a major problem from the start: therefore the current direct HDL cholesterol measurement may not be as robust as a biomarker of cardiovascular risk as the formerly used precipitation methods.
