Toth - Figure 13 - Universal screening Text
The question now is, how do we screen for FH? Universal screening is recommended to detect elevated serum cholesterol, and FH should be suspected when untreated fasting LDL cholesterol, or non-HDL cholesterol (total cholesterol minus HDL cholesterol) are at or above the following thresholds:
- In adults ≥20 years of age, serum LDL cholesterol levels ≥190 mg/dL or non- HDL cholesterol ≥220 mg/dL
- In children, adolescents, and young adults <20 years of age, serum LDL cholesterol ≥160 mg/dL or non-HDL cholesterol ≥190 mg/dL.
