This Figure shows the prevalence of FH and the reasons for all of this being so important. Heterozygous FH with total cholesterol levels of 350 to 550 mg/dL occurs in 1 of every 500 people, but in certain populations this is actually enriched by founder effects to levels of 1 in 300, or even 1 in 100 persons. Homozygous FH patients may have total cholesterol levels of 650 to 1,000 mg/dL, which occurs in about 1 in every 1 million people. Worldwide there are an estimated 10 million people with FH, and in the United States there are an estimated 600,000 people with FH.
