Several national dyslipidemia diagnosis and treatment guidelines target LDL cholesterol as the goal of therapy, while the US guidelines (ATP III) add non-HDL cholesterol as a second goal. In particular, the British National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines for Familial Hypercholesterolemia recommend the same treatment goal for patients with FH, namely aggressive lipid lowering to achieve a >50% serum LDL cholesterol reduction.
