Ito - Figure 4 - Lifestyle modifications
A strategy of therapeutic lifestyle changes (TLC) is the underpinning for treatment of FH patients,
and therefore the recommendations of the NLA are essentially similar to those of the US
National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP)’s third Adult Treatment Panel (ATP
III):
- reduction in total dietary fat and saturated fats;
- reduction in dietary cholesterol to <200 mg/day;
- increased dietary use of plant stanols and sterols and soluble fiber;
- maintenance of a healthy body weight by increased physical activity and caloric restriction;
- limited alcohol consumption;
- smoking cessation.
However, in addition to the TLC, the vast majority of patients will also need
pharmacotherapy to meet their LDL cholesterol treatment goals.
