The final Figure summarizes the main points of this presentation:
- FH is a treatable disease.
- FH is underdiagnosed and undertreated.
- Earlier recognition and appropriate treatment of FH can decrease the risk of
developing CHD and of progressing to CHD events.
- Screening of family members (“cascade screening”) and earlier screening is
important and mandated so that early treatment can delay or prevent the onset of
CVD and CVD events.
- Medical treatment strategies should incorporate high-potency statins as well as
combination therapy.
- Patients who are not responsive or do not attain goals with a combination of diet
and medication may be candidates for LDL apheresis, which should be available
for patients with inadequate response to therapy
