The question now is, how do we screen for FH? Universal screening is recommended
to detect elevated serum cholesterol, and FH should be suspected when untreated fasting
LDL cholesterol, or non-HDL cholesterol (total cholesterol minus HDL cholesterol) are
at or above the following thresholds:
- In adults ≥20 years of age, serum LDL cholesterol levels ≥190 mg/dL or non-
HDL cholesterol ≥220 mg/dL
- In children, adolescents, and young adults <20 years of age, serum LDL
cholesterol ≥160 mg/dL or non-HDL cholesterol ≥190 mg/dL.
