The fourth recommendation of the FNLA committee concerns the overall risk factor
profile. The CVD risk factors in FH patients are basically the same as those in non-FH
patients; therefore aggressive risk-factor treatment needs to be undertaken:
- control blood pressure;
- stop smoking;
- engage in a healthy lifestyle of regular physical activity, a healthy diet, and
weight control;
- low-dose aspirin may be indicated, depending on the level of risk.
In sum, the most important recommendation is that FH patients must be treated as
aggressively as other high risk patients by controlling overall risk factors.
