Most statins are now currently approved for children over the age of 10, and pravastatin is approved in the United States after age 8 years. As we have seen in the preceding Figures, the pathologic and imaging data suggest that starting at about age 10 is a critical period for advanced atherosclerosis development. There may be higher risk subsets in whom you want to treat at an earlier age than 10. These include those with extreme elevations of LDL cholesterol, the presence of multiple risk factors, the possibility of the receptor null mutation, and also those with a particularly malignant family history.
