Gidding - Figure 11 - cIMT in FH vs controls

Just in case there is any doubt as to why we need to start monitoring lipid values already at 10 years of age, the Figure shows the rate of change in carotid intramedial thickness (cIMT), comparing children with the genetic diagnosis of FH with their unaffected siblings. At about age 8 to 10 there is an increase in cIMT that is more rapid in those affected with FH. In fact, after age 10, cIMT increases at about 3 times the rate in children with FH versus children without – and this clearly illustrates the reason for the recommendation to begin treating children with FH already at the young age of 10.
