As listed in this Figure, if undiagnosed and untreated, FH leads to substantial risk of premature CVD events in men and women. The risk is lower in women who, on average, develop manifestations of CVD 10 years later than men. However, about 85% of men and about 50% of women with FH experience a coronary event before the age of 65. The CVD symptoms occur even earlier in the much rarer homozygous FH, even as early as childhood, and if untreated, their FH is associated with even earlier death from CVD.
