Physical Activity Level and Survival in COPD

FIG. 39:  This Figure shows the principal result from this part of the CCHS, which recruited almost 3000 patients who underwent spirometry and provided information including cigarette smoking.  Mortality (probability of survival) was assessed for patients with high, average, low, and very low levels of activity based on responses to an activity questionnaire.  As noted in the Figure, very-low activity consisted of doing mainly seated work, with no physical activity in leisure time.  The result was that 20 years later, patients with very-low activity at the first evaluation had a much higher mortality risk than those with high activity.  In other words, levels of physical activity appear to be associated with probability of survival, although whether this is directly causally related or is an epiphenomenon remains to be determined.
