Fig. 32: To try to rectify the problems, in 2006 Medicare, CMS, and the NIH started work on the Long Term Oxygen Treatment Trial (LOTT)[22] [as opposed to the earlier NOTT trial found previously in Figure 8 ]. They sought centers who would determine if supplemental oxygen increases the time to a composite outcome of all-cause mortality or all-cause hospitalization in patients with mild-to-moderate degrees of resting hypoxemia or resting pulse oximetry >93% – ie, normoxemic at rest and severe desaturation during exercise – in order to clarify the challenge of not having any data showing that patients with mild-to-moderate resting hypoxemia or who have normoxia at rest and desaturate only with ambulation will benefit from supplemental oxygen therapy.
