Prevalence of AFib: Age and Gender

The phenomenon of increasing AFib prevalence with age is present in both males and females, although interestingly, as Figure 5 shows,  the risk appears to increase a little more with age in males than in females.[3]  At the older ages, for example in those >85 years old, the higher prevalence of AFib in men versus women must be adjusted for the fact that a greater proportion of women than men are alive; nevertheless, if one looks at the men versus the women who are alive at that age range, there is still a higher prevalence in males – and this is something that is not commonly appreciated.
