This Figure shows the 3 principal efflux pathways that this particular assay tested and their relative contributions to the majority of the overall HDL cholesterol transport. It can be seen that as measured in this particular assay,
- the ABCA1 pathway accounts for about a third of the efflux;
- the ABCG1 pathway (which this method does not distinguish from a simple aqueous diffusion pathway) is responsible for almost a half of the efflux from these macrophages;
- the SRB1 pathway, which was the smallest component, amounted to about one-fifth of the efflux.
