People with homozygous FH typically have LDL levels 3-6-fold higher than the general population. Those with heterozygous FH typically have LDL 2-3-fold higher than the general population.
Patients with FH have a heightened risk for cardiovascular disease due to a lifelong exposure of elevated atherogenic lipoproteins. If left untreated, persons with homozygous FH very frequently have coronary disease before the age of 25 and sometimes even in the teens. Those with untreated heterozygous FH experience the same coronary artery disease typically before age 55.
