McGowan - Figure 1 - Pathophysiology of Severe Familial Hypercholesterolemia (FH)

Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a commonly inherited autosomal-dominant disorder. It can, however, occasionally be inherited as an autosomal recessive disorder. People with FH are at very high risk for lifelong cardiovascular disease (CVD) due to a lifelong exposure to elevated atherogenic lipoproteins. If left untreated, people with homozygous FH typically will have coronary heart disease (CHD) before the age of 25 and sometimes even earlier; individuals with untreated heterozygous FH generally have CVD before age 55.
