Technology of Adaptive / Auto Servo Ventilation (ASV)

FIG. 4:  Adaptive or auto servo-ventilation is usually abbreviated ASV.  There are three different types of devices manufactured by three different companies:

  • Minute ventilation-targeted ASV (MV ASV), ResMed (San Diego, CA);
  • Flow-triggered ASV (FT ASV), Philips Respironics (Murrysville, PA);
  • Trilevel ASV (TL ASV), Weinmann Geräte für Medizin GmbH + Co. KG   (Hamburg, Germany).

This presentation will mainly address the common aspects of the algorithms of the devices, although there are some differences.

This Figure outlines the indications and intended uses for these ASV devices as stated by the manufacturers.  The MV ASV device is indicated in patients weighing >30 kg (>66 lb) with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), central and/or mixed apneas, or periodic breathing.  The FT ASV device is similarly indicated in adult patients of >30 kg (>66 lb) bodyweight with OSA and respiratory insufficiency caused by central and/or mixed apneas and periodic breathing. Both devices are intended for use in hospital or at home.  The TL ASV device is indicated in patients aged ≥12 years with periodic respiration or Cheyne-Stokes respiration (CSR), with central, mixed, or complex sleep apnea.
