So what is new in the treatment of VTE?  In the past few years 2 new classes of oral anticoagulants have been introduced that at least in theory offer important advantages over the current UFH / LMWH / fondaparinux regimens.  These new anticoagulants can be given in fixed oral doses without routine monitoring, thus substantially enhancing convenience for patients and overcoming the challenges of both early and long-term parenteral administration of VKA therapy, which requires food, drug, and alcohol restrictions and routine monitoring (Figure 7).  Eikelboom J.
