Greater Stroke Severity

As shown in the Figure, the probability of higher cortical dysfunction is increased in patients with AFib, and this increases with age, with the odds ratios for significant cortical dysfunction equal to 1.97 vs. 1.64 for patients aged ≥ 85 years with AFib versus age ≥85 without AFib. [13]  The probability of patients requiring constant nursing care is also much greater with AFib, particularly in older patients, with an odds ratio of 2.23 vs. 1.77 for patients aged ≥ 85 years with AFib versus age 85 years without AFib.  Finally, 41% of patients with AFib and stroke are bedridden versus 24% of patients with stroke but no AFib.
