The Figure shows the intracranial and non-intracranial bleeding rates in a large cohort of about 13,000 patients with AFib.[68] Although it is clear that both kinds of bleeding risk increase with age, intracranial hemorrhage really increases only in the patients aged >80 years.  Non-intracranial bleeding increases in patients >80 years of age only when not on warfarin.  Intracranial bleeding risk increases in patients >80 years of age independent of warfarin use, and therefore the risk/benefit ratio again remains in favor of anticoagulation in this elderly population.
