Risk Factors and Efficacy
After the greater risk of thromboembolism in women seen in the previous Figure, the good news in this Figure, from a pooled analysis of 5 randomized trials,[128] is that anticoagulation therapy with warfarin decreased the risk of stroke by 84% in women compared with only 60% in men. So importantly, the chance of a woman with AFib having a stroke or systemic emboli is higher, but the use of antithrombin therapy actually seems to confer greater benefit to females even than for men.
