It is really a risk stratifier. So when we get a normal Pap and a negative HPV test, what does that mean?
It means that you get 99% to100% assurance that cervical cancer is not present, and is not likely to occur
in the next few years. So, an HPV test result can increase safety with less frequent screening.
But what if we get a positive HPV result with a normal cytology result? That means there is increased risk for
either missing the disease on the Pap, or subsequent risk of developing CIN 2/3, or worse. These women
require increased surveillance.
