Monk - Figure 16 - HPV Testing: Impact on Detection & Prediction of Risk

So this, I kind of put it all into one slide, these are large, randomized clinical trials, which show the increase in sensitivity that is overcoming the false negative rate of Pap testing with the addition of testing for the HPV virus right on the cervix, and there was an average gain in 22%.  So, the Pap test is useful in detecting lesions, particularly in the beginning, but we can not only increase the sensitivity, but we can evaluate the future risk.

So, I am passionate about this.  I am passionate about this because I have seen what this could do to people.  And I want to close on one point.  I am a cervical cancer doctor, and you can feel my sincere disgust for this virus, and you will probably never see a patient with cervical cancer, but you will see a patient with HPV.  And you will see a patient with an abnormal Pap test.  So our purpose today is to review the guidelines so that we can identify those patients who might get cervical cancer in the future and reduce that risk, but most importantly to cost effectively to use the guidelines so we best utilize our healthcare dollars.
