Counseling Women ages ≥ 30-65 After Co-testing With Pap and HPV DNA

  1. Fact:  Majority will be negative on both PAP and HPV tests. They need to be reassured that it’s safe to wait 5 years to rescreen, but I want to see you yearly.

  2. If they are HPV positive, remind them:
    -  Most everyone has HPV at some time in their lives.
    -  There is no way to know how long you have had HPV, and it could have been there for a very long time.
    -  HPV is not a sign of infidelity.  That is between a couple, but it is certainly not a reason to question infidelity of a partner.
    -  Very few will develop abnormal cells or cancer, but a positive HPV test allows us to follow and monitor you carefully as
long as your HPV tests remain positive.
