Jin - Figure 11 - HPV Testing Facts

If co-testing should logically start at age 30, what is the rationale for using HPV DNA testing?  HPV testing as part of screening:

  1. Is more sensitive than cytology in detecting CIN 2 or worse.

  2. As a molecular test, certainly detects disease earlier, therefore enabling longer screening intervals and follow up.

  3. Can be automated, centralized, and standardized in labs across the country.

  4. Reduces cervical cancer incidence and mortality.  (We will talk about that a little later).

  5. Improves detection of glandular lesions and adenocarcinomas.
