The Pap smear has been around a long time – 5 decades – as the standard screening test, with approximately 55 million Pap tests performed annually in the United States. Cervical cancer mortality in the United States has decreased by 70% in large part due to the Pap test. The Pap test has very high specificity in detecting cervical dysplasia, which is a pre-cancerous lesion.
