2009 New England Journal of Medicine Publication (HPV Screening for Cervical Cancer in Rural India, Sankaranarayanan R, et al. N Engl J Med 2009; 360:1385-94).

What we really want to know at the end of the day:  does screening save lives, or is there any mortality benefit?

Methods, Design:  131,746 women in India ages 30-59 were randomized into four different arms:

  1. Screening by HPV DNA testing

  2. Cytology

  3. Visual inspection with acetic acid

  4. Control (counseling only).

Women with:

  • Positive results on screening underwent colposcopy and biopsy

  • Precancerous lesions or cancer received treatment.
