Jin - Figure 21 - Predictive Values: HPV + Pap

Another large cohort study in Europe looked at the value of a negative HPV test result in screening compared to a negative cytology result.

Methods, Design:
  • 24,295 women enrolled into the trial had at least 1 pap or histopathology examination follow-up after their initial HPV and cytology test.

  • Investigators looked at the incidence of CIN 3+ six years after baseline HPV and cytology testing.
Results:  In the red box on the graph, you can see that if there was a negative cytology at the baseline versus negative HPV testing at the baseline, the incidence of CIN 3+ in this study of > 24,000 women is statically different.

Conclusion:  HPV testing provides much better protection, and longer, excellent negative predictive value.
