Berman - Figure 20 - HPV Vaccination: Do We Still Screen?

For women who have received HPV vaccination, there is no change in screening.  We have two HPV vaccines licensed in the U.S., and both contain HPV 16 and 18 virus-like particles.  They are not infectious, and these types are the cause of 70% of cervical cancer.

Current practice with HPV vaccine is that 30% of cancers will continue to occur.  We also know that the rate of completion of the 3-vaccine series has been rather poor in this country.

Coverage with vaccines is low, and duration of vaccine protection is also unknown at this time.  So, we encourage you to educate women to continue their screening under the current guidelines.
