Monk - Figure 12 - High Risk HPV & Cervical Cancer

This is what I am talking about, this is a cervical cancer.  This is a radical hysterectomy that I did.  You can see on the anterior lip of the cervix this, my residents call it a cauliflower lesion, it looks like a cauliflower.  And I have resected the cervix and the vaginal cuff and the soft tissue next to the cervix called the perimetrium.  You can see the top of the uterus, which is called the fundus, and the ovaries and the fallopian tubes, which were removed electively.  This is a cervical cancer.  This is what this virus does to people.  This woman probably will be cured.  She required some radiation and some chemotherapy after this radical hysterectomy because it had spread to the lymph nodes.

This is a smaller lesion; you can see the inflammatory exudate.  These cancers get inflamed; they get infected.  This is an adenocarcinoma.  You can see it up inside the cervical os.  That is easy to treat.  But this woman wanted to have a baby, so not only can this cancer kill you, but also it can prevent you from having a child or a grandson.  This virus hurts people.  It is a virus you do not want, but it is a virus that if you have, you want to know that you have it so that these serious medical conditions do not happen to you.
