If co-testing should logically start at age 30, what is the rationale for using HPV DNA testing? HPV testing as part of screening:
- Is more sensitive than cytology in detecting CIN 2 or worse.
- As a molecular test, certainly detects disease earlier, therefore enabling longer screening intervals and follow up.
- Can be automated, centralized, and standardized in labs across the country.
- Reduces cervical cancer incidence and mortality. (We will talk about that a little later).
- Improves detection of glandular lesions and adenocarcinomas.
